Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to complete a custom table?

For solid wood tables you can expect a timeframe of 2-4 weeks until completion. Epoxy river tables take slightly longer to finish, generally 3-5 weeks. Shipping times are generally 2-4 days to most locations in North America.

How durable are wood/epoxy tables?

The durability of wood tables depend entirely on the species utilized. Fonthill Mill uses denser woods such as Maple, and Walnut. Our tables are very durable, but they won’t accept abuse such as deep scratches from blades, or burn marks from hot pots. The beautiful thing about solid wood tables is that they will last forever if they’re kept in a climate controlled environment, and can always be refinished at a relatively light cost no matter how bad the surface damage. Epoxy is slightly more delicate than wood. Epoxy is essentially a solid plastic material when cured, and is actually denser than most woods. This being said, clear epoxy tables will display scratches easier than wood surfaces because epoxy allows light to travel through, and reflect any imperfections. This is not to steer clients away from epoxy. I’ve used an epoxy coffee table for years now and still looks great. We are extremely picky here and like to warn clients who may be of the same type as us! Epoxy tables can be refinished on site just like wood tables.

How can I best care for and clean my table?

When dealing with wood, it’s best to minimize liquids, and oils coming in contact with the surface of the table. Using coasters and placemats when eating is recommended . Included with every table purchase is a natural cleaning soap for your table. Avoid placing hot dishes, and sharp objects on the surface of your table.

What are the main differences between wood and epoxy tables?

Wood tables have been cherished in our societies forever. Even the ancient Egyptians utilized wood tables to keep precious objects off the floor. Wood tables are extremely versatile, and provide a comfortable warm essence to any interior space. Wood tables are best suited for high traffic applications where the table will be used heavily. Epoxy “River Tables” are a rather new product, coming to popularity on the market within the past 10 years. Epoxy tables work better in modern, unique, & artsy interiors. These tables also double as pieces of art with plenty of room for customizing design elements including epoxy colour, and pigment type. Individuals looking for a flexible, solid, everlasting family heirloom should consider a solid wood table. Those looking for a unique statement piece of art, catered to their personal style should consider a wood/ epoxy table. Wood/epoxy tables run for around a 35-45% higher cost than wood tables.
